The Hidden Guru

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa

Waheguru ji ki Fateh

Hello friends, welcome to season 2 of the Sikh history Sakhi podcast, I am Harpreet Kaur your host

My dear friends, in the last season, we discussed that after declaring Bhai Lehna ji as the second guru of Sikhs and renaming him Guru Angad; Guru Nanak dev ji gave Hukam to Guru Angad dev ji to go to Khadoor. After which Guru Nanak ji left for his heavenly abode and became one with the almighty.

In today’s episode, we will discuss what happened when Guru Angad Dev Ji returned to his homeplace.

GURU ANGAD JI IN PAIN OF SEPARATION

Now, as mentioned in Suraj Parkash:

Meaning: Even though Guru Angad Dev Ji’s heart longed to remain by Guru Nanak Ji’s side, He bowed his head in obedience and complete humility to His Master’s hukum. The thought of leaving was unbearable, but Guru Angad Dev Ji suppressed his inner turmoil

With tears in his eyes, knowing that this might be the last time of seeing Guru Nanak ji, he went towards Khadur. But the pain of separation was unlike anything. It was as if the light that filled his world was gone and only emptiness remained. To him, Every moment felt like an eternity, as if the very breath of his existence had been taken away.

His soul felt incomplete, like a river that had been cut off from its source.

Guru Angad Dev would spend the whole day in meditation, his solace to the pain. He lived in the memory of that sacred connection, carrying the weight of both the pain of separation and the eternal light of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s grace.

 HIDDEN BY MAI VIRAI JI

After reaching Khadur, guru angad dev ji went to Mai Virai’s house.

My dear friend, Mai Virai Ji was a pious and spiritual lady, she was the one who arranged Guru Angad Dev Ji’s marriage to Mata Khivi Ji. She was devoted to Guru Nanak Ji and it is said that Guru Nanak Ji stayed at her house once.

Now, Mai Viraai was close to guru Angad dev ji, When she saw guru angad ji she asked:

Meaning:

What happened to you? Why do you look so devastated and where is my guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji?

Guru Angad Dev Ji stood in silence, not a single word escaping his lips, His eyes filled with tears and each breath was heavy with sorrow. Not a word was spoken, yet Mai Viraai Ji, being the wise woman she was, understood everything with a single glance. She saw the depth of his pain and knew this was more than just a farewell—it was a moment of deep, unspoken grief.

Then Guru Angad dev ji said to her:

Meaning: Mai ji, I don’t wish to speak or meet anyone, I want to remain in solitude. No one should be told about my stay here.

Mai virai ji listened to Guru ji’s hukam and obeyed. She cleaned one room, put a bed in it, and gave it a nice sitting or aasan in it. The room was sealed from the outside, but Guru Ji remained inside as mentioned in Suraj Parkash:

Meaning: The door was plastered from the outside with minimal access as per Guru Ji’s choice, so that no one could know.

She would not provide information to anyone who inquired about the Guru's location. She even brushed aside inquiries from Guru Angad Ji's son and his wife, Mata Kheevi Ji. The Guru didn't take a break from his meditation at all.

STAY IN HIDING – MEDITATION

Friends, During this time, He was so consumed in the love of Almighty that he ate and slept very little as mentioned in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji on ang 94:

ਮੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਦੇਖੇ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

mai bin gur dhekhe needh na aavai ||

Without seeing my Guru, sleep does not come.

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਤਨਿ ਵੇਦਨ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਰਹੁ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥

mere man tan vedhan gur birahu lagaavai ||

My mind and body are afflicted with the pain of separation from the Guru.

Then, He devoted his days to the remembrance of the almighty and recitation of naam as Guided by Guru Nanak Dev ji.  However, Mai Viraai, wished he would eat more, even though he only had basic, butterless bread once daily.

Yet, Guru Angad ji’s heart stayed inseparable from the Lord, the Almighty Soul merged with his own. He was one with the Divine.

BACK IN KARTARPUR

My dear friends, it is believed that Guru Angad Dev Ji stayed there for 6 months. Meanwhile, back in Kartarpur, no one knew about Guru Angad Dev Ji’s whereabouts.

The Sikhs who came to seek his blessings, returned disappointed and were becoming restless. Guru Angad ji were not at his home in Khadur nor in Kartarpur.

Then the wise Sikhs along with Baba Budha ji started searching For Guru Angad Dev Ji everywhere.

Finally, they arrived in Khadur at Mai Virai ji’s house. Sikhs in large numbers started gathering around mai virai ji’s house and yet she did not say a word.

Baba Budha ji paid his respect to her and with folded hands said as mentioned in suraj parkash:

Meaning: Mai ji, where is Guru Angad Dev Ji? We all have come to meet him, all the Sikhs are waiting to have a glimpse of him.

Bound by His Hukam, Mai Viraai ji did not answer any of his questions.

After that, Bhai Buddha turned to face all directions and saw that one chamber was closed from the outside and that the door on the opposite side had just been plastered. Just by looking at the chamber and with the way which his heart was being pulled into that direction, he knew his Guru was here!

Baba Budha Ji then stood outside that chamber and said as mentioned in Suraj Parkash:

Meaning:

My lord, I am Budha, I have been blessed By Guru Nanak Dev Ji through his holy words that I will be able to know wherever my Guru resides, I will always be in service of my guru, in whichever form.

My Guru ji, your Sikhs, your sangat are looking for you, they are eager to meet you, my lord, kindly bless us with your Holy glimpse. Your sikhs have searched for you tirelessly. My Dearest Almighty, Give your Sikhs the strength by your holy darshan.”

Then my dear friend, Baba Budha ji removed all the plaster and bricks and unlocked the door of that Chamber.

Then he saw the HOLY GLIPMSE OF GURU ANGAD DEV JI.

Tune in next Tuesday to know what happens next!

I hope this brings some light into your lives

Thank you!
