The Continued Divine Light
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa
Waheguru ji ki fateh
Hello friends, welcome to season 2 of sikh history sakhi podcast, I am harpreet kaur your host
In the last episode, we discussed how Guru Angad Dev Ji, overwhelmed by the pain of separation from Guru Nanak Dev Ji, secluded himself in a hidden chamber known only to Mai Viraai Ji. Soon after, Baba Buddha Ji and the Sikhs set out to search for him and finally discovered the chamber..
Baba Buddha Ji, then with his deep spiritual awareness, sensed the presence of his Guru as soon as he approached the house. Carefully, Baba Buddha Ji removed the plaster sealing the door and entered. Inside, he saw the radiant, serene face of Guru Angad Dev Ji, sitting in deep meditation
Let's see what happens next
Now, as mentioned, Sri Suraj Parkash:
BABA BUDHA JI OPENS THE DOOR
Meaning:
After praying to his Guru with folded hands, Baba budha ji then removed the plaster and bricks away and opened the door.
Then he saw Guru Angad dev ji sitting in meditation in his serene beauty, with his eyes closed and so peaceful vibes all around. The divine beauty of the Guru was beyond earthly description—his face radiant with a soft, celestial glow that seemed to illuminate the entire space. There was a peaceful stillness in his presence, as if time itself had paused to honor the serenity of his soul.
The peaceful aura around Guru Angad Dev Ji was so profound that it felt like the very air had been blessed by his presence. His eyes, though closed in meditation, emitted wisdom and compassion. The Sangat, including Bhai Buddha, felt the same spiritual energy that had once radiated from Guru Nanak ji, now alive in Guru Angad Dev Ji. Overwhelmed by the sheer purity and divine radiance of their Guru, they instinctively fell at his feet, asking him to meet his sangat.
However, Guru Ji didn’t move or open his eyes.
Friends, it is claimed by some writers that Baba Budha Ji asked one of the Sikhs to play rabab and sing Guru Nanak Ji’s hymns, listening to which Guru Angad Ji came out of the room.
Baba Buddha Ji, along with the sangat, then turned to Mai Virai Ji, urging her to request Guru Angad Dev Ji to bless the holy congregation with his presence and guidance. They reminded her that Guru Nanak Dev Ji had bestowed upon him the sacred responsibility of the Guruship, and now it was time to lead the sangat on the righteous path shown by Guru Nanak Ji.
It was time for Guru Angad Dev Ji to fulfil this divine role, offering his wisdom and spiritual direction to the seekers who had gathered in devotion. They longed to hear his voice, which would echo the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, and to receive the clarity and direction needed to navigate their spiritual journeys.
Mai Virai Ji then went to Guru Angad Ji with his holy congregation’s request as mentioned in Suraj Parkash:
Meaning:
Guru Angad Dev Ji came out of his room at his sangat’s request.
Then he saw all of Guru Nanak Ji’s holy congregation gathered before him, and his heart overflowed with humility and love. The sight of the devoted sangat, assembled with such reverence and faith, moved him deeply, filling him with a profound sense of gratitude and connection so much that Guru Angad Ji recited Bani for the first time, as mentioned in SGGS on ang 83:
ਜਿਸੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਮਰਿ ਚਲੀਐ ॥
jis piaare siau neh tis aagai mar chaleeaai ||
Die before the One whom you love;
dhirag jeevan sa(n)saar taa kai paachhai jeevanaa ||2||
To live without Him is to live a worthless life in this world. ||2||
Meaning:
Die for the one you love, for to live after their death is to lead a life without meaning in this world.
My dear friends, through this bani Guru angad ji explained to his sangat the reason for his hiding. That the pain of separation from guru nanak ji was too much that his life felt worthless.
My dear friends, through this bani, Guru Angad Dev Ji lovingly shared with his sangat the reason for his seclusion. The pain of separation from Guru Nanak Dev Ji was so overwhelming that his life seemed empty without his beloved Guru's presence.
It was this deep love and longing that led him into solitude, reflecting the immense bond he felt with Guru Nanak, whose guidance had shaped his soul.
Now, upon listening to the divine words and seeing their Guru, the holy congregation was overjoyed and bowed to him with happiness.
Soon the word travelled and people from near and far started coming for the holy darshan and blessings of Guru Angad ,Dev Ji and as mentioned in Suraj Parkash:
Meaning:
Everyone who meets Guru Angad Dev Ji feels the same divine presence they experienced with Guru Nanak Dev Ji. To them, there is no distinction between the two Gurus; they see them as one continuous divine soul, only the physical form has changed.
As mentioned in Sri guru granth sahib ji on ang 967:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਖੈ ਸਚਾ ਕਰੇ ਸਾ ਬਾਤ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਰਹਾਲੀ ॥
satigur aakhai sachaa kare saa baat hovai dharahaalee ||
Whatever the True Guru says, the True Lord does; it comes to pass instantaneously.
gur a(n)gadh dhee dhohee firee sach karatai ba(n)dh bahaalee ||
Guru Angad was proclaimed, and the True Creator confirmed it.
naanak kaiaa palaT kar mal takhat baiThaa sai ddaalee ||
Nanak merely changed his body; He still sits on the throne, with hundreds of branches reaching out.
dhar seve umat khaRee masakalai hoi ja(n)gaalee ||
Standing at His door, His followers serve Him; by this service, their rust is scraped off.
Meaning:
The light of Guru Nanak Ji now shines through Guru Angad Ji, and as Guru Nanak himself had said, Guru Angad is not separate from him, but a living embodiment of his spirit and wisdom.
There was no change in essence, only in the outward form, as the same eternal truth continues through both Gurus.
I hope this brings some light into your lives
Thank you!
